Fordite, often referred to as Detroit agate, Motor City agate, paint rock, or paint slag, is a term used in lapidary for polished segments of layered paint deposits originating from automobile manufacturing facilities. These deposits are composed of automotive paint that has hardened enough to be shaped and polished. They are created from the accumulation of enamel paint slag on the tracks and skids used during the painting process of cars with acrylic lacquer, which undergoes multiple baking cycles. Recently, this material has been repurposed into jewelry.
